"A Vow Between Two Men - Luffy and Kozuki Momonosuke" is the 771st episode of the One Piece anime. Short Summary[] As everybody reacts to learning that Momonosuke's father Oden, who was executed, travelled to Laugh Tale on Gol D. Roger's ship, Robin realizes that Oden, must have known about the Void Century, which the archeologists of Ohara spent their lives studying. Zoro believes that this is the reason that Kin'emon's group of samurai were targeted by Doflamingo and Caesar, who have ties with Kaidou, even though Oden kept all the information to himself for the safety of his people. Kin’emon, as well as all the other retainers, say they plan on fighting back because of Oden’s last words, which were, "Open up Wano Country!" The reason the samurai came to Zou is to ask their allies, the Minks, to help them fight and the rest of the samurai, excluding Momonosuke, ask Law and Luffy for their help. The rest of the Straw Hats accept the offer without any hesitation, but Luffy declines the request. As the group try to knock some sense into their captain, Luffy calls out the crying Momonosuke and says he should be requesting their aid if he is the supposed leader of Wano Country. Momonosuke steps up and pleads for Luffy’s help to take down Kaidou, as he is too small right now but still wants to protect all of his retainers. Luffy then accepts Momonosuke’s request and the rest of the leaders unite to form the Ninja-Pirate-Mink-Samurai Alliance, whose goal is to defeat the Emperor Kaidou. Nusjuro flashback Clover flashback Roche flashback Zadie flashback Spandine flashback Inuarashi Jack flashback Kaidou flashback Anime Notes[] After Luffy's group learns that Oden was part of Roger's crew, we're then given a recap on the Void Century. The anime adds the following Usopp asking the samurai if they knew the secret of the world after Zoro explained the reason why Doflamingo and Caesar were after them. After the samurai and the two rulers of Zou revealed Oden's will to open Wano Country to the world, Brook explains to Chopper how Wano Country is closed off from. Right after Inuarashi and Nekomamushi explain that they will use the true power of the minks the next time they face the Beasts Pirates, Chopper tells Nekomamushi to take his injuries more seriously. Kanjuro and Raizo also asking for Luffy's aid. Franky and Chopper also encouraging Luffy to ally with the samurai in their cause. After Kin'emon asks Luffy for his aid, the anime shows Luffy saying that he refuses more times than in the manga. When Nami tries to embrace Momonosuke in the manga, Brook angrily states that she shouldn't. In the anime, he doesn't say anything. Momonosuke's flashback to the day Kaidou sacked Wano Country is extended, showing a large blaze started by flaming arrows, Kin'emon's panicked reaction, Lord Oden calling out while trying to escape the flames, and the instant Momonosuke's mother was slain. When Momonosuke ran into Kaidou, Kaidou is shown in full and wielding his mace rather than a simple glimpse of his mouth. Kaidou's eyes are shown clearly during Momonosuke's flashback, staring down at him with hatred. In the manga, a clear view of Kaidou's eyes was first shown when he was venting his rage over losing his SMILEs. After Kin'emon comments on how Luffy treats Momonosuke like an adult, the manga showed Inuarashi saying how admirable it was. In the anime, it is Raizo instead. One Piece by Sam Leach, Jan 9th 2017 How would you rate episode 771 of One Piece ? Community score I have a ton of patience for One Piece's pacing, since it's usually pretty easy for me to think of episodes more like individual "scenes" in a much bigger narrative, but I do grow tired of it every now and then. These past few episodes, centering around the Road Poneglyphs and the crew's game plan regarding the upcoming Kaido and Big Mom fights, have been packed with useful game-changing information, as well as important emotional beats necessary for earning the deeper story content on the horizon. But it's getting a tad repetitive as we enter our third episode of standing around in a room talking. The point of interest this week is Momonosuke, the samurai child and the deceased Oden's heir. Kin'nemon bows his head and asks Luffy and Law if they will fight alongside the Kozuki tribe to rescue Wano from Kaido, and in a big surprise, Luffy refuses. He could have simply said "yes" and he does by the end of the episode, but he's bitter that Momonosuke didn't ask them himself. Momonosuke is the one who the Minks and the other three samurai think of as a leader, but he's too cowardly to play the part. Childishness is not a great excuse when it's Luffy of all people who's calling you out. This is one of those Luffy moments, reminiscent of his fight with Vivi midway through the Alabasta arc, where he refused to move forward unless the people he's fighting alongside can show their guts and make a tough decision. Luffy is often portrayed as a dumb character, but every now and then, we're reminded that the more accurate term for him is simple. Luffy's as much of a straight shooter as they come, and that translates to how he sees the world. The kinds of people he has little respect for are those who are too afraid to take responsibility for what they want. So with tears in his eyes, Momonosuke finds it in himself to beg and the deal is done. The alliance, which so far has consisted only of Luffy and Law's crews, has grown to include the Minks and the Kozuki samurai. The bigger Straw Hat family continues to grow. I appreciate this scene for getting something heartfelt and emotional out of Momonosuke, who I think otherwise is one of the more obnoxious characters hanging around the cast at the moment. The other significant emotional beat is the communication of Oden's final words "Open up the Land of Wano!" Wano is looking to be the most significantly Japanese of all the locations that we've encountered so far. We already know it as a closed off country, independent from the reach of the World Government. The immediate parallel that I've been made aware of is to Japan's real-world Sakoku period, where the country held strict foreign policy regulations up through the mid-1800s. Wano is meant to be Oda's love letter to his country as he presents it, warts and all. The general vibe is that Oda has some domestic social commentary to impart as we learn more about the fictional Wano, something that hopefully remains interesting from an outsider's perspective. These have been an incredibly important past few episodes of One Piece as the show lays out some immediate and long-term plans. The crying tears of the samurai are certainly moving, but the way the story got divided between these episodes leaves a lot to be desired. As big of a deal as the information is, and as emotional as the important moments are, it's structured in such an unhelpful way. All three of these past few episodes, which take place mostly in one room, have included repeats of Robin's childhood, extended narration reminding us of information we mostly already know, and big emotional moments of some kind with the samurai that all start to feel the same. This is entirely a structural issue with all of this being spread between three episodes, as this repetition was not felt in the manga. I absolutely believe that the big, epic story that these episodes are setting up will deliver, but right now the time spent on the set-up is outstaying its welcome just a tiny bit. Let's get to fighting some Emperors already. How many times will Luffy doing the exact same thing make me cry my eyes out? It never gets old. I suppose because it’s such a warm and powerful stance he takes, to inspire those to fight for themselves and when they are strong enough to do that, fight alongside them. He’s done that since he met Coby and punched him for being a wimp but fought Alvida for him once he told her off. As Luffy does what is not expected, I think we come to expect him to deny such things as his fleet or this alliance, he sees the world in a unique way and dives straight forward and that makes his approach unorthodox. Yet still, the question was why? I had to ponder it, I wasn’t sure. Realizing it was for Momonosuke to choose to fight for himself made for a really beautiful scene. One which encompassed three things that came together to make me cry. The first was that Nami made me laugh the hardest I have ever laughed at a money joke. I don’t normally audibly chuckle at greedy Nami with few exceptions, but in this case it was the subversion of my expectations which had me laugh incredibly loud. Luffy stopped Nami from comforting Momonosuke and then refused the deal, as I was wondering why, Nami agreed with Luffy. It came off like she realized the truth that Luffy saw and I started to be impressed with her. She understood Luffy in a way no one else did and she was supporting him! For her to turn from this impressive figure giving a speech to “I’m going to negotiate” like the money demon she is was what got me. And as you may know, to insert comedy into touching or sad scenes only makes the emotion kick in all the more due to contrasting it with the prior laughter. The second was that I cared for Momonosuke for the first time beyond being a prop that made the samurai stand out as a family, his voice acting was excellent, and the way he walked to Luffy crying and thinking about all the suffering he’s been through before declaring both his will and his weakness was just so good. No matter how hard it is, he wants to bring down the man who killed his parents. It was a human expression of futility and anger and sadness and determination, it came off strong. And the third component which hit me was that I, for the first time ever, saw Luffy in a new light. I saw Momonosuke as Luffy when he was a kid. When he was crying and declaring with Ace that they would live with no regrets. That they would be free and fight for what they wanted no matter how scary it was. And of course Luffy would want to help people in those shoes. Of course Luffy would want to speed up the process for any kid that he could relate with. It’s no surprise that struggling will power and dreams/ambitions are the things Luffy sees and understands perfectly. This mix of humanizing Momonosuke’s struggle, thinking back to Luffy’s past, and laughing very hard moments earlier was like such an explosion of emotion. It may have been less than a chapter in manga, but to build an entire episode around a discussion of issues and a dialogue over forming an alliance is totally my kind of thing. It's purposeful and creates a strong sense of style. As of now, the samurai have Luffy and his fleet alongside them. The samurai and Law, characters who are some of the most endearing in One Piece have now been etched together into fate making post time skip, with very recurrent enemies and allies, feel as if it has more continuity than ever. It was emotional and we finally understood in full force what the goal of the disgraced samurai is. To avenge Oden by killing the shogun who rules and Kaido. And to open Wano which is disclosed from entry and exit, to link it with the rest of the world. This is the kind of One Piece I love!!!
